Feature; Ladydoll

Source: Brian Casey

An energetic live show, big plans, a big sound – these are all things we’ve heard before about “up and coming” Irish bands. However a key difference between the usual bands and Cork band Ladydoll, is that you could just as easily call their live show professional, their plans well thought out, and most importantly, their sound fresh. If Ladydoll aren’t up and coming, then they’re ready to explode.

Though the band are scarcely together two years, they have already demonstrated their promise in two mature sounding and extremely refreshing releases, one an EP, and another a recently released double single. The snappy energetic poundings of drummer Eoin Ryan, and sometimes lazy sometimes lightening bass lines of Nora King provide the perfect driving force behind the smooth distorted guitar riffs, and winding, tasteful guitar melodies of Dave Shaw. On top of this is the vital ingredients that will really set Ladydoll apart. Sometimes guitarist, sometimes keyboardist, always vocalist Finn Sedas has the voice and songwriting ability that turns this group of already very capable musicians into a band who are impossible not to enjoy. With often abstract lyrics, and the catchiest of hooks, the lead vocals could easily be an illegitimate love child born of A Brian Molko, Frank Black and Leonard Cohen love triangle. However this isn"i"’t where the inevitable comparisons between Ladydoll and Placebo will end either.

The mix on their latest studio offering was supplied by none other than Dimitri Tikovoi, who produced Placebo’s 2006 release, Meds, and adds to the atmosphere of Ladydoll. However simply comparing them to Placebo is narrow minded, and would ignore the unique almost theatrical and Eletric-Jipsy melodies and chords that drive some of the songs – an area which the band are sure to explore further.

The band plans to venture back into the studio to start work on an album, and are already receiving radio play from DJ’s on 2fm and others in Ireland, as well as in France, England and Canada.

Such a reception in such short a time frame would lead one to believe that if the quality of the songwriting continues, this band are destined to grow and grow in popularity and in stature, until the “up and coming” tag is no more.

Ladydoll play Pravda, Dublin on the 31st of January, The Savoy, Cork on 12th February and will feature on a unique live webcast from Claycastle Recording Studio in Cork on the 26th February.
