Altern 8 Tomorrow Night

Big Dish Go are delighted to welcome back old skool legends Altern-8 to The Underground.

These hardcore ravers from Stafford, England, Altern 8 comprised Mark Archer and Chris Peat, and was an offshoot of their Nexus 21 project. Of the two, Archer was the house music aficionado, while Peat was a former music technology student with an interest for computers. They crashed the UK charts in 1991 with Infiltrate 202 and Activ-8 (come with me), two chaotic slices of hardcore, the latter reaching number 3. They were aided in their chart aspirations by the circulation of fictitious press stories concerning their alleged activities, which included promoting the decongestant Vicks Vapo Rub, which, it was claimed, heightened the effects of Ecstasy; and standing as local candidates for the 1993 General Election.

Their live events were also designed as eye catching performances, where the band donned RAF chemical warfare suits and dust masks. They were aided by their resident dancers Crez, Jon Parkes, and MC MkOne, in the case of their gig at Stafford’s Bingley Hall, an actual shaman. His job was to cleanse the venue of its rock n roll, prior to performance.

Tickets available on the door for €14./p>

Super Furry Animals to Release New Album in March

The best thing to come outta Wales, except for Katherine Kenkins Super Furry Animals will release a new album on March 16 digitally via Superfurry.com, followed by a full physical release on April 21.

In a statement the band said of the album: Musically its based around riffs and grooves we have been playing around with over the last few years. We have enough now for a whole album so even though it is still very melodic we thought we could leave off the acoustic ballads for the time being.

"Its recognisable as a melodic SFA record, but is very focused musically as a cohesive album. And no country rock as Daf [Ieuan, drums] has developed a pedal steel phobia. Which has confined the great Nashvillian instrument along with the saxophone to the banned instrument directive of the SFA board. Theres only one slow number, which isn t slow at all."

The working tracklisting of the album is:

The Very Best Of Neil Diamond

White Socks/Flip Flops

Inaugural Trams

Sounds Familiar

Cardiff In The Sun

Where Do You Wanna Go?

LLiwiau LLachar

Mountain

Moped Eyes

Record Review, Nikolai Fraiture

Artist: Nikolai Fraiture
Source: Paul Murphy

Boredom can be a terrible thing for a musician, particularly one who has already spent time in the lime light and sold millions of albums. Nikolai Fraiture, bassist with The Strokes delved deep into his shoebox of memories, as his band's hiatus (due to end in Feb '09) began taking longer than expected. Finding rants and poems, written years ago, Nikolai set out to add to them music and melody. Following the footsteps of fellow Strokes members Nikolai created a side project, called Nickel Eye, and has compiled his memories into a debut solo album called The Time of the Assassins.

Musically inspired by the likes of Neil Young, Frank Black, Leonard Cohen and the Kinks, Nickel Eye fuses indie, folk and post-punk monotony into 11 tracks that certainly have the lyrical simplicity of the Kinks' "Apeman" but lacks the honesty of Neil Young and the charisma of Leonard Cohen and Frank Black.

Record Review, The Trews, No Time For Later

2009-01-28
Artist: The Trews
Source: Robert O Connor

One of the negative affects of grunge, was the Post Grunge scene. Bands like Nickleback, Matchbox Twenty, The Goo Goo Doll’s and Creed managed to tap into a family friendly, almost Christian market with their sleek sounds, wholesome content and overly whiney radio friendly ballads, all masquerading under the guise of ‘Rock’. Because of the clean living ideal that surrounded the bands; parents were more inclined to pick up the latest Everclear or Bush album for their children, rather than allowing them to listen to the likes of Marilyn Manson, Green Dayor Nine Inch Nails. Of course, money comes before integrity in the world, these days, and a slew of imitator’s are still being snapped up by record companies, hoping for a big pay off when one of them releases’ the next How you remind Me or With Arms Wide Open. Nova Scotia locals, The Trews are such a band. Their third album, No Time for Later is filled with feeble attempts at meaningful power ballads, run of the mill stadium rock anthems, that reek of Mitchelstown’s finest and the odd gem thrown in for good measure. Almost everything on this album sounds like something else that bored you to tears a hundred times before. However, there are some notable efforts, nothing to get majorly excited about mind you.

Des Lynam, Richard Harris, Terry Wogan.

Limerick (It's in the west of Ireland for all you Dublin types) has given us some of the greatest people ever created and musically speaking she has been no slouch either with wunder-rockers giveamanakick and the Out On A Limb posse all hailing from that direction.

Enter Ronan Carroll, who, according to himself, may currently reside in this writer's hometown of Galway, and who peddles his aural wares under the moniker of Tenaka, a mysterious tag with Manga overtones.

EPonymously Titled is his debut EP and the love and care positively oozes from the speakers, delivering top drawer, chill-out electronica with Mr. Carroll demonstrating an enviable ear for melody and IDM noodling...........

Live Review; Fighting With Wire, Think Tank

2009-01-27
Artist: Fighting With Wire
Source: Paddy Murphy

The day you realise that you're getting old is a hard fuckin day to stomach. It's ok that you've hair is thinning, it's ok that you can't run as fast, it's even ok that you can't dance to save your life anymore. But what really sucks is goin into a pub to see a band and be the oldest person there by about seven years, except for one or two, but me thinks they were connected with the band.

It's a lonely feeling, being the old guy at a young rockers gig, even the sight of the emo chicks did nothing to liven up the soul. This must be what it's like to be Jim Carroll.

Think Tank, the venue with the second worst name in Dublin, first has to be the Button Factory, tonight plays host to the North's new great rock hope Fighting With Wire. If you ain't heard of these then you ain't obviously buying Kerrang anymore, shame on you. Didn't you know that it's the only music magazine in the world who's sales are actually going up every year.

Interview, Micheal Ferrick, Amusement Parks on Fire

2009-01-26
Artist: Amusement Parks on Fire
Source: Paul Murphy

Ahead of Thursday's Club AC30 gig at Whelan's on Thursday, which kicks off a mini Irish tour, taking in Galway and Cork Amusement Parks on Fire's founding member Michael Feerick takes time out to talk about a new album, touring later this year with 65Daysofstatic and his hopes for 2009.

Drop-d: How have you been, are you looking forward to getting back on the road?

Michael Feerick:Yeah, we can't wait; we've been practicing a pretty epic set so it should be good. We've always had to fly over before but this time we're getting the ferry so we can bring all our own gear and our light show, which is just lots of strobe lights basically. It should be really good, I'm really excited. It'll be really nice this time we're getting out of Dublin for a bit and going out to Galway and Cork which should be really cool. It's really exciting, I can't wait.

Record Review, Telepathe, Dance Mother

2009-01-23
Artist: Telepathe
Source: Adam Lacey

There is very little about Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais, AKA Telepathe (pronounced telepathy) that is not, well, cool.

Hailing from the currently ubiquitous hipster-haven of Brooklyn, the pair met as part of experimental punk outfit Wikkid, having cut their individual teeth in respective bands First Nation and Bloodlines with guitarist Ryan Lucero nowadays joining up sporadically to help out on the live circuit.

Versions of Can't Stand It and Chromes On It had the online music collective wetting themselves with anticipation last year as Telepathe moved forward from the drone, avant garde sounds of their Farewell Forest EP and Sinister Militia 12" - released last year through Social Registry - and appeared to have developed a sound that is as at once spooky, dissonant and catchy as fuck.

Drop-d Interview; For Ruin

Cork metallers For Ruin have spent the last four years blazing a trail and spreading the doctrine of metal, combining crushing black and death influences with melody and dynamics, all the while slowly building a dedicated following, and releasing their first album, December, in September 2007, with the follow-up, Last Light, in the can for release early this year, and a support slot with metal legends Paradise Lost and Rotting Christ in Belfast in April. With the promise of a faster, all-round heavier beast in the offing, DROP-D caught up with guitarist/vocalist and founder member John Murphy to talk recording, the industry and metal in general.

DROP-D: For Ruin was formed in 2003, what was the inspiration and influences behind its emergence?

JM: Well the first release was in 2003 and that's the first time people got to hear anything so I guess that's when the band was formed alright. A mate asked me to play drums for his black metal band Meiche, so I did that along with some guitars and stuff and we decided that it'd be a split demo so I went and recorded the few songs I had written over the previous while along with some covers and that's where it came from. It did ok, but I don't even think I own a copy of it now (ha ha) its a pretty mediocre release. Influences and inspiration? I don't know, I don't think about that much. I guess all of the music I listened to growing up along with my circumstances at the time...

Feature; Ladydoll

Source: Brian Casey

An energetic live show, big plans, a big sound – these are all things we’ve heard before about “up and coming” Irish bands. However a key difference between the usual bands and Cork band Ladydoll, is that you could just as easily call their live show professional, their plans well thought out, and most importantly, their sound fresh. If Ladydoll aren’t up and coming, then they’re ready to explode.

Though the band are scarcely together two years, they have already demonstrated their promise in two mature sounding and extremely refreshing releases, one an EP, and another a recently released double single. The snappy energetic poundings of drummer Eoin Ryan, and sometimes lazy sometimes lightening bass lines of Nora King provide the perfect driving force behind the smooth distorted guitar riffs, and winding, tasteful guitar melodies of Dave Shaw. On top of this is the vital ingredients that will really set Ladydoll apart. Sometimes guitarist, sometimes keyboardist, always vocalist Finn Sedas has the voice and songwriting ability that turns this group of already very capable musicians into a band who are impossible not to enjoy. With often abstract lyrics, and the catchiest of hooks, the lead vocals could easily be an illegitimate love child born of A Brian Molko, Frank Black and Leonard Cohen love triangle. However this isn"i"’t where the inevitable comparisons between Ladydoll and Placebo will end either.

The mix on their latest studio offering was supplied by none other than Dimitri Tikovoi, who produced Placebo’s 2006 release, Meds, and adds to the atmosphere of Ladydoll. However simply comparing them to Placebo is narrow minded, and would ignore the unique almost theatrical and Eletric-Jipsy melodies and chords that drive some of the songs – an area which the band are sure to explore further.

The band plans to venture back into the studio to start work on an album, and are already receiving radio play from DJ’s on 2fm and others in Ireland, as well as in France, England and Canada.

Such a reception in such short a time frame would lead one to believe that if the quality of the songwriting continues, this band are destined to grow and grow in popularity and in stature, until the “up and coming” tag is no more.

Ladydoll play Pravda, Dublin on the 31st of January, The Savoy, Cork on 12th February and will feature on a unique live webcast from Claycastle Recording Studio in Cork on the 26th February.

Animal Collective, Record Review, Merriweather Post Pavilion

So today sees the release of Animal Collectives ninth album, Drop-d decided to give the album two differing reviews.

But Public Enemy's Chuck D has been proven wrong. Believe the hype.

End of the Road - Road Records To Close

It is with a heavy heart and frail fingers that Drop-d brings you this latest nail in the coffin of the independent Irish music industry. First, there was the shocker of The Script's inclusion on the Choice Music Prize shortlist: we were angry, but we managed to get over it. Only 3 hours later, our second favourite free magazine, (behind Connected of course) State announced it was hanging up it's paper boots and retiring to the realm of ones and zeroes: we were saddened and disappointed, but we persevered.

And now, comes the sorriest news of all, Road Records, that bastion of independence, that home of love for music, that musty-smelling, over-crowded, fiercely proud institution, is to close its earthly doors permanently. It is impossible to describe how much of a blow this closure will be to independent music in Dublin, impossible to describe the loss that many people will feel as a result of this, however, their closure is due to all of our own neglect as well as whatever mitigating economic circumstances can be cited. It was there all along, stocked to the brim with interesting sounds that we would never discover without the careful guiding of Dave or Julie in the store. Instead we gorged on torrents, feasted on streams, and freeloaded our way to obscurity.

Now they are gone, and we will be poorer for it, and we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Below is a transcript of a touching post that Dave and Julie left on Thumped.com, it speaks far more eloquently of the situation than anyone else ever could, because it comes from their hearts.

Read deep and be silent.

Lads and Lassies

First of all, thank you all for your kind words about our store and us personally, we really do appreciate it as Road has always been about a personal approach from day one.

I am very sad to say that we will in fact be closing down the store in the next 2 - 3 weeks as things have just become too difficult for us to proceed, we basically have no money left and as it is just a small shop run by Julie and myself we can longer afford to fund it. Belive me if we were at least breaking even each week then we would continue on in hope but as we are continually losing money, and have been for at least six months, we cannot carry on as any losses incurred will have to be personally paid for by us. We have put enough of our own money into the store in the last year just to keep it afloat but I am sad to say we really don't have anything left at this stage, if we continue to trade we will just continue to lose money that we honestly do not have any more and thus we will end up paying off bank loans for the rest of our lives. I know a lot of people think if you have your own store that you have money behind you but believe me that is just a myth.

Its been an absolutely amazing eleven years for us and neither of us regret one single second of it, when we close I will not be looking back on wasted time in any way. We have made some amazing friends through the shop and have had the pleasure of dealing with some truly fantastic bands [and their members]. Without blowing my own trumpet I do think Dublin will be a worse place without us as I think from day one we were always the most approachable store for Irish bands and their independent releases, it was one of the main reasons for setting up the store [some of you may remember the fact that I spent most of my youth plugging away in bands with nowhere to sell our music] and we have always tried to be as supportive to local music as possible, mainly because people in this country make music as good as if not better than anywhere else but have never had a proper outlet to sell it. We have always had a policy to make sure to play Irish music in the store so people in here can hear it and understand the quality and diversity of music being made in Ireland. If we heard something that excited us then we would always go out of our way to promote it as much as possible both in the store and on the site.

The reasons for the downturn are many and varied and if there was just one then we could try overcome that in some way but its no longer possible to pinpoint just one. I will try list some of the reasons I see for the death of the small shop and I really do hope I am not right in thinking that many more will go the same way, I have always been optimistic that this city can sustain a couple of smaller indie shops but I no longer believe that to be true, again, I really hope I am wrong with this opinion but the way people go about buying their music these days does not instill me with too much confidence.

1. Regardless of what I have thought over the years downloading has effected our business, probably more so the illegal side of things, filesharhing and the likes. I speak as a shop on this one but god knows how much small bands suffer because of this aswell.

2. Below cost sellers online, everybody wants a bargain and its hard to take the moral highground on this one, but everytime a purchase is made to the likes of Play etc is a nail in the coffin to the indie store, these online sellers don't care one hoot about indie bands and music, they just need to sell in bulk and as quickly as possible. They will never put any money or effort back into indigenous music, try asking them to sell 50 copies of a beautiful hand made cdr release.

3. The city centre just does not have the same volume of people walking around it anymore, its a simple fact, less people means less sales. We have noticed a massive downturn in the amount of people visiting the store in the last year.

4. Kids don't buy music anymore. That sounds like a fairly broad statement to make, I know there are still some out there but we don't see any young people in the shop anymore so as we lose older customers we don't gain any new ones.

5. Obviously this country is going through a recession at the moment so it would be stupid of me to claim that this wasn't having an effect on our business but having said that things were already beginning to change long before that.

6. The deal with selling independent local releases always had to be a two way exchange for us, we never made much money from local releases [and that was never the idea] but we always sought the support of bands. By that I mean if we were selling your music then we would always appreciate the bands making a purchase in the store in return, sadly that did not always happen, and before you jump at me for making this statement I do accept that plenty of you out there were very supportive of us but take if from me we did have quite a lot of bands coming in to us with their own release to sell whilst also carrying a hmv bag with a purchase they had just made, simply because it was cheaper there.

7. The cost of running a store in this city has increased dramatically in the past 4 / 5 years, rents have gone up so much, insurance increased, bank costs and so many other things that over the years it has become increasingly more difficult just to meet our costs on a week to week basis.

8. Whilst this one may not seem so obvious the cost of an average cd or record in the store is now less than it was 5 / 6 years ago and that is a good thing to the consumer but it has also seriously dented our chances of making a living in any way, it just means we have to sell more to cover our costs but as I mentioned with less customers coming through the door that has not been possible.

As you may gather from this piece we are both very very sad about the prospects of closing down our shop, this is our only way of making a living and now we are both back to square one with pretty much no money [and a brand new baby to support], I don't know what either of us are going to do from now on but I'm sure we will survive.

I say this from my heart that I really hope the last few remaining indie stores will survive in the city and I hope you can take time out to visit them and make a purchase, otherwise these stores will not make it through these times either, and don't leave it for a couple of weeks, do it today as they really do need your support and its only when they are all gone that you will then miss them.

Again, thank you all for your kind words and to anybody out there that has supported us in any way thank you also, we have had so much pleasure over the last eleven years doing what we do.

Dave and Julie

This Town Needs Guns for Irish Dates

ODL Booking & The Richter Collective Presents:
This Town Needs Guns (Sargent House, Big Scary Monsters)

IRISH DATES FEBRUARY 2009

Oxford is home to the oldest University in the English-speaking world, but more recently has been acknowledged as a musical hotbed with a habit of producing some of the most vital bands around today (Radiohead and Foals, to name a few). Their latest export is This Town Needs Guns, a band being hailed as the darling buds of the thriving UK indie scene. The band have toured across Europe with the likes of I Was A Cub Scout, Meet Me In St Louis, Rolo Tomassi and Maps and Atlases and the release of 2007s split EP with Cats And Cats And Cats garnered critical acclaim from fans and press alike.

This Town Needs Guns entered the studio in April 2008, setting out to find an intricate balance between indie rock, catchy pop and technical prowess, all while ignoring the lure of special effects and studio wizardry. Through this process, their debut full-length Animals was born; a collection of songs that bring to light the band's pure, clever and earnest song writing ability. Tim Collis' guitar sounds as though it's being caressed by 6 hands as his brother, Chris, flings his sticks around the drum kit not wanting to leave any tiny patch un-touched. Bassist Dan Adams completes the rhythm section with his dancey, jazz influenced bass lines while Stuart Smith's vocals dip and soar, taking this record from thought provoking depths to sky-scraping triumphs.

Animals Will be released in the US on Sargent House (Daughters, Maps and Atlases, Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes) Early 2009 and is currently on general release in Europe through Big Scary Monsters.

Thursday 5th Feb - Whelans - Dublin (Support from Adebisi Shank + And so I Watch you From Afar)
Friday 6th Feb - Cork - Fred Zepplins (Support from The Avalanche Effect)
Saturday 7th Feb - Limerick - (Crude Magazine Issue 2 Launch Party)
